New Blasphemous DLC Launches Next Month, Adds New Game Plus And More-October 2024
Oct 17, 2024 6:09 PM

During Double Fine's Day of the Devs Developer Showcase, developer The Game Kitchen announced that Blasphemous will get a new expansion this August called The Stir of Dawn that adds a bunch of stuff. Available for free on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, the DLC includes a New Game Plus mode, more bosses and enemies, new storylines, quality-of-life improvements, and much more.

The Stir of Dawn arrives on August 4 on all platforms. Many of the game's additions are locked behind the New Game Plus mode called True Calvary. This mode, available to those who finish the main campaign, will allow players to run through the storyline again on a much higher difficulty while retaining all previously unlocked items and skills. There's a new, optional Penitence System that, after activating one of three available Penitences, permanently modifies your Blasphemous playthrough with adjustments to things like damage and health.

You can check out the reveal trailer below.

True Calvary also packages an additional questline with new bosses, different enemy types, unique items and rewards, and more. But that's not all that's available in The Stir of Dawn and not everything introduced in this new Blasphemous DLC is locked behind the New Game Plus mode.

Elsewhere in the game's free DLC is a variety of quality-of-life improvements. This includes adjustments to the map and fast travel system, updated voice acting and the inclusion of a full Castilian Spanish voice track, new areas and visual improvements, more executions and a brand-new counterattack mechanic, and more.

Blasphemous originally launched in 2019 to largely favorable reviews. We scored the game a 7/10 in GameSpot's Blasphemous review, saying, "Though it can be frustrating that its core gameplay never evolves past the often one-note rhythm of hacking and jumping across different levels, keeping it from reaching greater heights, I still came away impressed with how much Blasphemous stuck close to its haunting, dark storyline. To that end, playing through this send-up to Metroidvania games was a satisfying trial to overcome in its own right."
