Midway has released some additional details on Area 51, a first-person shooter in development for both the Xbox and PlayStation 2. Players will take on the role of Lt. Nick Cross, who is sent into Area 51 to investigate the top secret government facility. But during his search, Cross stumbles upon aliens and becomes infected with biological mutagen that starts to transform him into something that isn't entirely human. The game will feature eight levels as well as 15 human and alien weapons. In addition, Lt. Cross will start to gain some alien abilities because of the mutagen, and he has to find the cure before he completely transforms. There will also be a variety of alien enemies created by Stan Winston, who has won Academy Awards for his creature designs.
Area 51 will support online multiplayer for the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox, and it's currently scheduled for release in 2004. The GameCube version, which was originally announced when Midway announced its partnership with Stan Winston, is no longer in development.
