Netflix Renews Controversial Show 13 Reasons Why-December 2024
Dec 18, 2024 8:51 PM

13 Reasons Why, the controversial Netflix show about a teenager's suicide, has been renewed for a second season. This was announced on Twitter and through producer Selena Gomez's Instagram.

The show is based on the Jay Asher novel and follows the story of a high school student, Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), who takes her own life. She leaves behind 13 tapes that explain the "reasons why" she did it.

Netflix does not release viewership numbers, so we don't know how many viewers its reached and how that compares to other shows. But it's been one of the most-discussed new shows of late, so the renewal order is no big surprise.

13 Reasons Why has not been without controversy. People have mentioned that the show might not do enough to cover the mental illness element of suicide. Schools have sent letters to families to warn them about the content of the show, while Netflix itself has done more in that area as well.

The show's first season, containing 13 episodes, premiered at the end of March. No start date for Season 2 has been announced. While story details for Season 2 are under wraps, star Dylan Minnette told Entertainment Weekly, "I think that there's potential to know more about these characters and I think that there are good stories to be told."
