Netflix is pumping the brakes on all future Russian projects and acquisitions as the nation's invasion of Ukraine stretches into its seventh day. Variety was the first to report on the decision.
The streaming service had four reported original projects in the pipeline. An unnamed source close to Netflix said the company is "assessing the impact of current events." This is the latest swift sanction from across the globe as punishment for Russia's unprovoked military attack against Ukraine. For Netflix, the impacted productions include a series directed by Dasha Zhuk that was already filming, and another series set in the '90s that finished filming in 2021.
As Variety also reports, The Walt Disney Company announced Monday it will similarly be pausing all theatrical releases in Russia. Warner Bros. has halted the release of The Batman in Russia. You can read more about both those developments here.
Russia has also been barred from major festivals and award shows.
The games industry has also offered solidarity in supporting Ukraine. Developers including CD Projekt Red, Bungie, and 11 bit studios are making donations and calling on others to do the same to aid victims of the war in Ukraine.
