Netflix Boss Doing "Everything I Can" To Get Christopher Nolan's Next Movie
Netflix Boss Doing "Everything I Can" To Get Christopher Nolan's Next Movie-October 2024
Oct 22, 2024 7:38 PM

Netflix's top movie boss, Scott Stuber, has pledged to do everything in his power to encourage Christopher Nolan to make his next movie for Netflix. Nolan has been outspoken about his love and admiration for the theatrical moviegoing experience, so getting him on board may not be easy. But speaking to Variety, Stuber said he hopes Netflix's recent deal with another one-time critic of streaming services, Steven Spielberg, might encourage Nolan to come around.

According to Variety, Stuber and Nolan have "had ongoing conversations."

"If and when he comes up with his new movie, it's about can we be a home for it and what would we need to do to make that happen," Stuber said. "He's an incredible filmmaker. I'm going to do everything I can. In this business I've learned you need to have zero ego. I get punched and knocked down and get back up."

Spielberg's Amblin film studio is working with Netflix on new projects, though whether or not Spielberg directs any of them remains to be seen. Spielberg himself previously said that Netflix movies should not qualify for the Oscars. According to Variety's sources, reports about strife between Spielberg and Netflix were "overblown."

As for Nolan, he told IndieWire in 2017 that he would never work with Netflix. "No," he said at the time. "Well, why would you? If you make a theatrical film, it's to be played in theaters."

Netflix does bring some of its original movies to theaters, too. It did this with The Irishman and Army of the Dead most recently, just to name a couple.

More recently, Nolan publicly criticized Warner Bros.' decision to bring all of its 2021 movies to HBO Max. Nolan, who has worked with Warner Bros. for a very long time on films like the Batman trilogy, Inception, and the recent Tenet, said it's bad form on the part of Warner Bros. to do this. "It's sort of not how you treat filmmakers and stars and people who, these guys have given a lot for these projects," he said. "They deserved to be consulted and spoken to about what was going to happen to their work."

Nolan has not announced what his next movie will be, but as one of the most noteworthy directors in the business--and now with Netflix aiming to work with him--it'll be very interesting to see how it all plays out.
