Netflix recently unveiled an announcement teaser for Extraction 2, a sequel to the popular 2020 action-thriller starring Chris Hemsworth (Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Now, during the streaming service's Tudum event, we know that Extraction 2 will pick up right after the events of the first film.
Even though Extraction seemed to very definitively end with Hemsworth's character dying at the end of the film, Hemsworth announced, "Tyler Rake is alive and well and ready to take on his next mission." In the clip, we definitely see Tyler alive--but not doing quite so well. Badly wounded after a firefight on a bridge, Tyler takes a header into the water below, and miraculously after a beat swims to the surface.
According to Netflix last year, some 90 million households watched Extraction over its first four weeks of release in April 2020. At the time, it outpaced similarly impressive viewing records for Tiger King, which started airing the month before. Extraction did so well for Netflix that a follow-up film was already announced a month after release. Production on Extraction 2 started this month in the Czech Republic.
Extraction was directed by Sam Hargrave, a stunt coordinator on Avengers: Endgame, who made his directorial debut with the film. The movie was co-written by Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo. He and his brother Anthony also produced Extraction.
Extraction is available to stream now on Netflix. Its sequel does not yet have a release date.
