Hackers figure out a way to add new games to the near-impossible to find NES Classic Edition, last year's hot holiday item.
Hackers in Japan and Russia have figured out a soft-mod solution to add more games. Basically, it means that you won't need to physically crack open your console in order to get soft-mod to work. Modders have shown games like Battletoads running with no issues.
If you managed to get your hands on an NES Classic Edition, you can check out the video below for a step-by-step guide. If you don't speak Russian you can look at a translated guided here on the NES classic mods Reddit thread.
Be advised, the process can be a bit complicated considering it involves booting the NES Classic in FEL mode, editing internal NES files on your PC, and inserting your own ROMs. The modders have figured that you can have around 60 games in total due to the hardware's memory limitation.
You also need to supply your own ROMs. There are plenty of places online to look even though we can't condone piracy here at Wccftech since no ROMs are available legally from Nintendo.
The NES Classic is out now but on back-order at most major retailers. Our own Dave Aubrey spent some time with the NES Classic and pondered how today's youth will react to the NES Classic:
It’s a great Christmas gift, but above all else, the NES Classic feels like a collector’s item, aimed at the Nintendo faithful. Will today’s kids really play these games for hours on end, when they have an Xbox One or something similar to entertain themselves with instead? I’m not sure they will, I think that’s down to the Nintendo fans. Still, if you can convince someone to play Super C with you, you just might find yourselves playing for longer than you’d expect.
