Among the unknown characters seen in the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was an armor-wearing individual played by Forest Whitaker. We now know who he's playing, and it turns out it's a character we've seen before--albeit never in live action.
Whitaker plays Saw Gerrera in the upcoming film, according to Entertainment Weekly. He shows up about halfway through the movie's debut trailer from April, later saying, "If you continue to fight, what will you become?"

As EW points out, Gerrera is not a new character. He first showed up during Season 5 of animated series The Clone Wars and can be seen interacting with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. His general look in the movie is the same as on the show, with a cut on his face, though there are some differences.
Perhaps more notably, a new image of Gerrera that EW shared (above) looks different than he did in the trailer--he has much longer hair, for one.
"Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said of Gerrera. "He's on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him." She also described him as being "off on his own," rather than a part of the Rebel squad seen in the movie.
We also today learned that Rogue One does indeed feature Darth Vader, as was expected by many. The movie is set just prior to the events of Episode IV and tells the story of the Rebels' attempt to steal the plans to the Death Star.
Rogue One is due out on December 16, 2016.
