Netflix has become the home for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of My Hero Academia. Variety was first to report.

　　Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi, the upcoming Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) will write the movie's screenplay, which will be directed and executive produced by Shinsuke Sato. Sato has directed several live-action film adaptations of manga and anime, including The Princess Blade, Gantz, I Am a Hero, Bleach, Inuyashiki, and Kingdom.

　　There's no news regarding casting. Legendary Entertainment is producing.

　　The wildly popular superhero anime has so far spanned three films, six seasons (the most recent just got underway in October), and as a manga has yielded 36 volumes since 2014. Including digital editions of the manga, there are over 65 million copies in circulation--on top of that, the series has also spawned trading card games, many video games, and stage adaptations. My Hero Academia is written by Kōhei Horikoshi.

　　A synopsis for the series reads: "What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called Quirks? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy, of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?"

　　Earlier this year, Netflix also backed a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga Death Note.
