Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is set to release the first of four downloadable characters for Mortal Kombat later this month for an asking price of $5. However, gamers weary of shelling out $20 for a quarter of roster additions have another option, provided they own the Xbox 360 edition of the game.
Well, the Season Pass makes one thing Six Flags and Mortal Kombat have in common. WBIE today introduced the Mortal Kombat Season Pass for Xbox 360 players willing to commit to buying all four fighters up front. For 1,200 Microsoft points ($15), players will be able to download Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and a fourth mystery character as soon as they are available. Each fighter will feature a pair of fatalities and has a unique ending for the game's ladder arcade mode. The Season Pass won't be made available to PlayStation 3 players.
Each new fighter will also be accompanied by a free compatibility pack that users will be required to download to continue playing online. In addition to allowing players to fight others using the new warriors, each compatibility pack will also include a pair of retro "klassic" skins. The first pack's retro skins will be Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3-era takes on the robotic ninjas Cyrax and Sektor.
This isn't the first time the Season Pass concept has been embraced by a publisher. Last month, Rockstar Games detailed the Rockstar Pass for L.A. Noire. A $10 download for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, the Rockstar Pass gives gamers a way to purchase and preorder all of the game's announced add-ons at once. Purchased separately, those various extra cases and clothing options would have added up to $20.
The first Mortal Kombat game since 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and the ninth in the series, the reboot is rated M for Mature for pervasive gore accentuated by gruesome fatalities. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review of Mortal Kombat.
