Mortal Kombat is in theaters now (in addition to HBO Max) and it's making an impact during a time when the box office is coming back to life. The video game movie made $22.5 million in the US for its opening weekend to stand as the No. 1 movie domestically this weekend.

Coming in at No. 2 was the anime movie Demon Slayer ($19.5 million). In total for all movies, the US box office generated $52.9 million this weekend, which is the biggest single-weekend result since mid-March 2020 when the pandemic was kicking off.

Now Playing: Mortal Kombat Movie - First 7 Minutes

Mortal Kombat also now owns the record for biggest R-rated movie release during the pandemic. All of these box office figures and insight comes from Deadline. "All of this is a great sign that the world is opening up again, as the pandemic eases and vaccinations go up," Deadline reported.

The site also reported that Warner Bros.' decision to release the first seven minutes of the movie last Tuesday proved to be very successful. Deadline said pre-sales for Mortal Kombat tickets tripled on the day that footage was released.

Mortal Kombat was just the latest pandemic success story for Warner Bros., becoming the studio's fourth movie during the health crisis to open in the No. 1 position. The studio's other movies were Tom and Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Tenet.

Worldwide, Mortal Kombat has already made more than $50 million at the box office. The movie is also available on HBO Max, but there is no word yet on what impact its release on the streaming service had on subscriber numbers.

Here at GameSpot, our reviewer loved Mortal Kombat. "This new take on Mortal Kombat is one of the most successful video game adaptations yet--by a long shot," Chris Hayner said in our Mortal Kombat review. "While not perfect, it wonderfully captures the essence of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise."
