Mortal Kombat dev wants to make non-fighting game-February 2024
Feb 5, 2025 5:02 PM

Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm Studios has made a name for itself by creating fighting games, but the company wants to branch out. In an interview with the PlayStation Blog, Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon said if upcoming brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us performs well, the studio could work on a non-fighting game next. What genre might NetherRealm work on next?

"We feel like [Injustice: Gods Among Us] is kind of our first step towards that," he said. "If it does well, we would like to see our next step be a non-fighting game, maybe something unique in its own right. This is our first step in that direction."

Boon said in January that 2012 would be a year of diversification for NetherRealm, explaining that with future games, he wants to work on new intellectual properties in different genres, and for different formats. Additionally, the studio is currently hiring for next-generation technology.

Boon has made non-fighting games before, including 2005's action adventure Xbox and PlayStation 2 game Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, as well as 2001's third-person arcade shooter The Grid.
