Jeez, you take one weekend to move to Oakland and all of the sudden EA goes and buys up up exclusive rights to yet another sports franchise--this time NCAA college football. That's it, I'm officially cancelling my summer vacation plans in the thin hopes of saving the Professional Bowlers Association from being gobbled up.
As Alex said yesterday this isn't the blockbuster announcement the NFL deal was last year, if only because it's becoming practically expected behavior in the modern-day sports gaming industry. After a couple of attempts a few years back, the folks at 2K never really found their college pigskin stride, especially when stacked up against the superior NCAA game from EA Sports.
It's funny, there are football fans out there who wouldn't touch a Madden NFL game with a ten-foot pole. Yet it seems a good percentage of that crowd have sworn by the authenticity and playability of the NCAA series for years now, despite having next to nothing to compare it to. I wonder, if NCAA had a competitor as consistently strong as the NFL 2K series was to Madden, would our reactions to this announcement be more vicious? Or are we all simply getting numb to the cutthroat world we game in?
In other news, I'd like to personally take credit for Tiger's weekend Masters' win. I'm sure my sharp critique of his first-round performance was just the impetus he needed to pull out Sunday's dramatic victory and I look forward to further motivating him in June for the U.S. Open.
