More Overwatch 2 Crossovers, New Progression System Coming-October 2024
Oct 22, 2024 8:40 PM

It might be a while until the next one, but Overwatch 2 will see more collaborations in the future. Blizzard Entertainment was a bit nervous before its first big crossover with One Punch Man. Those worries were unfounded, though, as the partnership has been popular, according to the developer.

Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller discussed the team's thinking before the One Punch Man crossover (the event runs through April 6) and what's in store for the future on the game's website. "Full transparency, we were a little worried about blending another universe, even one as cool as this, into Overwatch," he wrote.

Now Playing: Overwatch 2 - Season 3 Trailer

"When we first announced the collab, we talked about our values with how we'd like to handle events like these, and players seemed to agree with us. The popularity of the event has given us the confidence to do more collaborations, and we're hoping to premiere [sic] another large collab later this year."

These types of collaborations have become almost common in other big free-to-play games. Fortnite has a long history with Marvel superheroes in the battle royale game and currently has an Attack on Titan crossover. Meanwhile, Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has popped up in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0.

Now Keller talked about more than just crossovers for the FPS. He also addressed Blizzard's changes and plans to make Overwatch 2 feel more rewarding for players after receiving grind complaints from the fanbase.

"Events now typically have skins that can be earned, and we've added Credits to the Battle Pass that allow players to purchase nearly all original [Overwatch] event skins," Keller said. "On top of that, we've substantially increased the amount of XP earned from each match. We're working on rebuilding the On Fire system in the new engine… We're also working on a much larger Hero and player progression system that we’re hopeful will launch later this year. This new system replaces the old player level system, while expanding on it to offer a bunch of categories for players to level and show off your progress to others."

The FPS will celebrate its six-month birthday next week. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's Overwatch 2 review.
