TOKYO - One of the biggest software announcements from the PlayStation Festival 2000 was Extermination. Labeled a "Panic Action" title by Sony, Extermination looks somewhat similar to Syphon Filter – but with gruesome alien monsters and spectacular explosions.

　　As reported earlier, Extermination is developed by a group called Deep Space (made up of many of the original creators of Resident Evil), and features a storyline somewhat similar to John Carpenter's The Thing. The game takes place in the snowy north and it pits you against alien foes.

　　The video that Sony displayed of Extermination at the PlayStation Festival 2000 showed the hero running through a near zero visibility snow storm, and right behind him a creature followed beneath the surface of the ground, seen only as an onrushing mound of snow. It also showed some scenes of the hero inside a warehouse environment being attacked by mutated figures. The graphics looked good at this point, but they didn't exactly blow us away. There were some impressive explosions though.

　　It appears as though Sony is pushing for this game to attract fans of the Resident Evil series, so Extermination could end up being one of the company's biggest titles of this year.
