Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak – How to Beat Shogun Ceanataur-January 2024
Jan 8, 2025 5:34 AM

MH Rise: Sunbreak features many long-awaited returning monsters from the series, and Shogun Ceanataur is one of them. This giant crab made its first appearance in Monster Hunter 2, and now it is ready to give you a hard time again. The beast is insanely fast, has sharp claws, and can inflict bleeding status with its attacks. It is not an easy monster to deal with but will give you great rewards once captured or defeated.

Let’s see how to beat Shogun Ceanataur in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, its weaknesses, and tips for winning the fight.

Shogun Ceanataur: Characteristics

Shogun Ceanataur is a Carapaceon with long, sharp claws and interchangeable shells. This species varies in how it fights depending on the shell it is wearing; once enraged, its claws will extend, doubling their length and the range of the attacks. Its known habitats are the Flooded Forest and the Lava Caverns.

This monster can dig underground to hide temporarily and find a new shell or pop out underneath you and send you up in the air, inflicting bleeding. It can also shoot powerful water jets from its mouth.

Shogun Ceanataur: Weaknesses

The beast is weak to Thunder and Fire attacks. Bring a Thunder weapon with you if you want to come prepared to the quest, as the monster is particularly vulnerable to this element. Aim at the head to deal the most damage, and try to break its shell to leave its body exposed to your attacks for a few seconds before the monster digs underground to find a new cover.

Its claws are quite resistant to attacks, but you can break them using impact weapons to reduce the threat. You should also be aware that both claws are weakest to Fire attacks, instead of Thunder ones (that still deal a good amount of damage), so depending on your strategy, you might want to take a Fire weapon with you.

How to Beat Shogun Ceanataur

Shogun Ceanataur is a significant threat, and you might collect some faints before winning the fight. It is more aggressive and way faster than the other giant crab you have already found in the game, the Daimyo Hermitaur, and can attack from all directions.

Since mobility plays a huge role in this fight, you might want to use light weapons this time, such as dual blades. This way, you will be able to dodge and move faster around the enemy, escaping from its deadly claws. Try to play defensively at first, studying its moves and patterns to develop a solid counter-attack strategy accordingly.

If you focus on breaking its claws, you can reduce its attack range accordingly. This will also limit the monster’s ability to inflict bleeding. However, if you get this status, you will lose health until you eliminate it. You can do that by crouching and waiting until the bleed stops. You can still move while crouching, but you will obviously be much slower. Shogun Ceanataur won’t wait until you heal, so try to find a good spot or play the quest with a friend that will cover you.

The monster can also charge at you or slay you with its claws that can be swiped in front and sideways, so use your Wirebugs to dodge as fast as you can. Once you learn its moves, the fight will speed up until you defeat the beast. Once beaten or captured, you will get good rewards to craft new equipment.
