Minecraft sales have reached an all-time high with 144 million copies having been sold across all platforms.

　　That’s what Helen Chiang, Minecraft’s new head, recently told American media and technology company PopSugar. In addition, the insanely popular sandbox building game set a new record last month for monthly active users with 74 million players.

　　"We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we're at 74 million monthly active users — and that's really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it's through the game updates or bringing in new players from across the world," Chiang told PopSugar. "That's really our goal, to keep building the community that we have."

　　Initially developed as merely a project by Markus "Notch" Persson, the game was publically released back in 2009 for PC. The Xbox 360 console version was released in 2012 and the Xbox One version two years later. The title was also released for PS3/PS4, Wii U, Switch, and 3DS.

　　Developer Mojang was purchased by Microsoft in September 2014 for 2.5 billion USD. "Minecraft is more than a great game franchise," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said. "It is an open-world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft."
