Midway Shows Off
Midway Shows Off-October 2024
Oct 28, 2024 6:28 AM

Midway stopped by the VGS office today with a stack of goodies - Quake 64, Olympic Hockey '98, Midway Presents Atari's Greatest Hits Vol. 2, and Gex: Enter the Gecco - and we've got brand-new art.

Dana Gould is back as Gex, the wisecracking, platform-jumping gecco. The prehistoric, sci-fi, and horror stages we saw look good, and truthfully, the graphics and animation are so smooth that the game really looks like it's for the N64.

Quake 64 is coming along. While Midway hasn't determined whether or not players will be able to enter their own Quake names in deathmatches or if bots will play a part in deathmatches (like Duke Nukem 64), the two-player mode is definitely looking good - seven levels from the PC version will be available, altered only slightly for the N64. Nearly complete, the N64 version is looking like a very exact port. "Quake is new enough that didn't think anything new needed to be added," Andrew Hoolan of Midway commented. So gamers can expect that Quake 64, unlike Doom 64, will be the Quake they've come to know and love. Watch for it in March.

Olympic Hockey '98 is on its way as well. Though the engine is the same as Gretzky's, Midway notes that there are a number of differences between the two games, including Olympic's use of "defection" instead of trading, its extensive stats, and its use of Olympic rules. Look for it toward the end of January.

Midway Presents Atari's Greatest Hits has a number of everyone's favorite games from 7-11 days: Millipede, Gauntlet, Marble Madness, Crystal Castles, Road Blaster, and Paper Boy.
