Midway Games Inc. Reports Record Second-Quarter ResultsMidway Games Inc. said Thursday that net income for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 1997 rose.
While Q2 revenues were US$125 million compared with $125.5 in the prior year for the same period, net income increased 21.7 percent to $18.4 million.
The company said shipments of console units increased 19 percent in the second quarter compared with the prior year, but revenues increased only 6 percent (due to unit sales price decreases).
During that quarter, Midway released ten new home video titles: three N64 titles, six PlayStation titles, and a single Saturn title.
Midway says its best-selling titles were MK Mythologies: Subzero, San Francisco Rush, Rampage World Tour, Top Gear Rally, and NHL & NHLPA Present Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey '98.
Electronic Arts Q3 Revs Swell Bottom LineElectronic Arts said on Thursday that the quarter ending Dec. 31 was a mighty fine one. Feeding the company's healthy financials last quarter were strong sales of PC and PlayStation titles - along with the fact that the company had a whopping 22 new releases during the quarter.
The San Mateo, Calif., company said Q3 revenues topped US$321.2 million, an increase of 35 percent over the same quarter last year. Net income for the quarter was $58.6 million, an increase of 51 percent compared with the same quarter last year.
"The entertainment software markets for both the PC and the PlayStation were very strong throughout the holiday season," Larry Probst, EA's chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
"EA's branded properties consistently ranked in the top ten at retail throughout the fall with products like Nascar 98, NBA Live 98, and Madden NFL 98. Our first football title for the Nintendo 64 was a huge success with consumers, extending our Madden franchise to its 12th hardware platform. For the fifth consecutive year, FIFA: Road to the World Cup was the number one soccer product in Europe. Ultima Online, the Company's first product developed exclusively for use on the Internet, continued to exceed our expectations with over 90,000 registered users."
During the third quarter, EA released 22 new titles: 13 PC titles, four PlayStation titles, three for the Sega Saturn, and two N64 titles.
Top sellers for the company were Madden 64 for the Nintendo 64; NBA Live 98, Madden NFL 98, FIFA: Road to the World Cup, and Nascar 98 for the PlayStation; and NBA Live 98, Wing Commander Prophecy, and FIFA: Road to the World Cup for PC gamers.
Musicland Says Games Drive Q4 SalesMusicland Stores Corp. said Thursday that its fourth-quarter sales came not only strong sales of music product, but also gains in apparel, digital video discs, and video games. Sales for the quarter were US$676.20 million versus $698.98 million for the same quarter a year ago. Musicland operates 1,363 stores in 49 states, Britain, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
