Microsoft’s Project xCloud and Google Stadia Not Very Interesting to European Gamers, GameTrack Survey Suggests-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 10:08 AM

Microsoft’s upcoming game streaming service, Project xCloud, and Google Stadia don’t seem to be very popular among European gamers.

At least, that’s what Gamesindustry.biz reports based on research conducted on its behalf by Ipsos MORI's GameTrack survey, which includes data from surveys conducted in France, Spain, Germany and the UK. The data suggests that 70% of the gamers in those countries aren’t interested in game streaming services at all. Only 15% of the remaining 30% have expressed to be interested in Project xCloud and Google Stadia.

“15% of the surveyed gamers (defined as anyone playing games via any device) are interested in a Netflix-style streaming service for games in the four territories included in the study”, the article reads. “The remainder either 'don't now' (12%) or already utilise a service akin to Google Stadia and Microsoft xCloud (such as the current market leader, PlayStation Now).”

“Just 3% of gamers claimed to be 'very interested' in such a streaming service.”

Interesting to note is that the data also suggests that European consumer interest could be boosted through additional features that the streaming services could offer.

“27% of surveyed gamers agreed with the statement 'I would be more interested in a streaming service if I could download content to my hard drive', (26% disagreed with that statement). And 41% agreed with the statement: "not having to wait for updates before playing is an advantage of streaming games" acknowledging the potential benefits of a streaming services (13% disagreed).”

Google intends to launch Google Stadia this November in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States. At that time, the service will be limited to the Pro tier users. In 2020, Google intends to launch Stadia in more countries and release the free Base service.

Microsoft’s game streaming service, Project xCloud, has yet to receive an official release date. The Console Streaming preview of the service will be available this October.
