Later this week at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Microsoft will showcase the features of DirectX 8, the latest iteration of its popular API, to software developers attending the show. The presentations will focus on DirectX 8's integration of DirectSound and DirectMusic into a single audio architecture.
DirectX audio will enable developers, composers, and sound designers to deliver motion-picture-quality interactive music and sound effects in games, said DirectX audio evangelist Chanel Summers. The next generation of DirectMusic provides real-time services and processing typically used by recording industry professionals.
Microsoft will also push DirectX 8's new networking capabilities (DirectPlay) as well, which now features a scaleable architecture for massively multiplayer Internet games, and support for the company's new voice communication tools, which were demonstrated at Gamestock.
DirectX 8 is scheduled as a free release later this year.
