Microsoft To Enable Developers To Support Cross-Network Play With Other Platforms
Microsoft To Enable Developers To Support Cross-Network Play With Other Platforms-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 3:43 PM

Not allowing cross-network play with users playing on other platforms, not counting Windows 10 games using Xbox Live, has always been one of the biggest issues Xbox One fans have had to deal with since the console's release. From today, however, Microsoft is going to change its stance on the matter.

In a new letter from Chris Charla, director of ID@Xbox, it's been confirmed that the company will enable developers to support cross-network play with other platforms, while continuing to natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games using Xbox Live.

First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Not all titles will allow online cross-play with other platforms, as it will be up to developers to support this feature. Additionally, Xbox Live players won't be forced to play with those playing on other platforms, as they will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live users.

According to today's letter, the first title that will take advantage of the new cross-play features is the popular Rocket League, developed by Psyonix. Soon, the game will allow cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

With Microsoft finally opening the door, the ball is now in Sony's and Nintendo's courts. We will let you know how they will respond to Microsoft's invitation as soon as possible, so stay tuned for more.
