Microsoft has announced a strategic partnership with NTT Communications to use the Japanese firm's infrastructure to support the online functions of the Japanese Xbox console. Trials for the Xbox-specific broadband service will begin this year, while the full service is set to launch in early 2002.
"Every Xbox console has built-in broadband capability, the technology of the future for online video gaming," said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect at Microsoft. "This alliance with NTT Communications will enable gamers to enjoy the best online game content and gaming experience available."
Microsoft and NTT Communications are collaborating further to explore the use of fiber optics lines, which will provide speeds up to 100Mb. Further details on Microsoft's online strategy will be revealed at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. The Xbox will launch in Japan by the end of this year.
