Metro Exodus Sequel Reportedly Fully Playable, Could Be Revealed Later This Year for 2024 Launch-September 2024

According to a rumor published by Tom Henderson on Insider Gaming, a Metro Exodus sequel is reportedly fully playable at developer 4A Games. As a result, the article posits a potential reveal later this year and possibly a launch in 2024.

During today's post-earnings webcast, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors did mention an unannounced triple-A game to be released in the fiscal year 2023/2024. However, we would be very surprised if he was referring to this Metro Exodus sequel. That would mean a launch before the end of March 2024, whereas the public update shared by 4A Games in late January painted a bleaker picture of all the hardships of game development in the middle of the war (most employees are still located in Ukraine). The studio also outright said the real life events would influence the Metro Exodus sequel.

The next Metro game is also changing for the better. And not simply because of the circumstances we find ourselves in. We’ve never hidden the fact that the Metro series has always carried a strong political and anti-war message. Yes, we’ve always wanted to entertain and immerse you in our post-apocalyptic world but there’s also been a bigger story to tell. And the war in Ukraine has made us re-think what kind of story the next Metro should be about. All the themes of Metro – conflict, power, politics, tyranny, repression – are now part of our daily life experiences. So, we’re embracing them and weaving them into the game with a renewed purpose.

Even if 4A Games currently targets a 2024 launch for the Metro Exodus sequel, there's a concrete chance it could slip due to continued problems caused by the war and all its consequences. On the other hand, it's been four years since the game launched, so it's fair to assume the game's progress is quite advanced, as hinted by the aforementioned sources.

Metro Exodus received high marks from critics and has sold over six million units across all platforms. The SDK is now available on PC, allowing modders to expand upon the game in several ways.
