Much like the rest of Marvel's Midnight Suns, of which you can read my review here, the Deadpool DLC (The Good, The Bad, and the Undead) is not the Ryan Reynolds we all know and love. There are a few simple reasons; Marvel's Midnight Suns is not an 18+ game, the other is that Firaxis wasn't hiring Ryan Reynolds, and finally, the game is more like the comics than it is the shows (for obvious licensing fee reasons).

Don't assume it can't keep the Deadpool sensibilities just because this game is for the younger audience. Here, Wade Wilson retains all his witty charm while talking about him and Blade crossing swords (metaphorically). You'll hear about The Hulk's lovely genitalia, too, alongside many other quips, jokes and self-deprecating humour.

In reality, Marvel's Midnight Suns has a Deadpool that we all know and love. The writing is top-notch, as it is for the rest of the game, and the interactions between characters feel as good as you could expect. A few fourth-wall-breaking jokes are thrown in for good measure, taking a pop at Firaxis and the game's budget. It's all in good fun, and like the core game, I found myself smiling and laughing far more than sighing or wincing. What more could you want?

Gameplay, that's what you could want. Marvel's Midnight Suns - The Good, The Bad, and The Undead features a new style with Deadpool. Like Wolverine, there is a bit of healing going on here, but Marvel's Midnight Suns plays more into Wade's love of chaos and murder. He comes with an ability called En Fuego; for every enemy you kill, a point gets added. Each point increases the damage you deal. So yes, it's all about dealing damage and killing, exactly how we love our Wade.

With a bevvy of attack cards, you'll not find yourself struggling to make some kills. These kills offer a boost to his "En Fuego" ability. In addition to this, the enemies you'll be facing off against in Deadpool's story missions. These enemies force you into killing quickly and making the most of your damage boost. Of course, Deadpool will have a lot to say out of his missions, as well as in battle. A personal favourite of his seems to be "insert catchphrase here".

These new enemies are Vampyres - remember the "y" because the game says it's essential, and they are not related to Blade - which has an interesting mechanic of adding a bleed element to your attacks when they hit you. Only this bleed is self-inflicting, and when one of your characters starts to bleed, one of them gets stronger. They offer a decent enough challenge in the DLC's missions, with Deadpools abilities proving himself to be a good companion far beyond them.

Naturally, with the addition of a new character, you get new friendship-building opportunities. Deadpool is undoubtedly aware that you've been going through this with every character in Marvel's Midnight Suns, and he's quick to point it out. Still, I enjoyed spending time with him and his usual comedic routine. Plus, you get the regular challenge mission should you get him to rank five, so that's a little extra boost to the missions in the DLC.

Also, as shown in the screenshot above, you can unlock a food truck in the training area. This food truck adds the ability to discard a card and to add a move once during the combat stage of Marvel's Midnight Suns. You can later improve this to include a shove.

There's no doubt that the Deadpool DLC (Marvel's Midnight Suns - The Good, the Bad, and the Undead) offers some great additions, but it raises the question of cost. At £11.99 alone, I couldn't justify it. At £39.99 for the season pass, assuming all four will be of the same length, it still makes it a tricky proposition. I realise Firaxis has also included Deadpool in every scene he could feature in, going over a lot of the game, so there is a lot of value there - it just feels like the DLC could be a little more economical.

Marvel's Midnight Suns - The Good, the Bad, and the Undead

Marvel's Midnight Suns - The Good, the Bad, and the Undead

Marvel's Midnight Suns - The Good, the Bad, and the Undead offers more of the core game but with a funnier character, one oozing with the personality we've all come to love across multiple forms (including Ryan Reynolds). While it's not the most extensive DLC, and I think the base price is high for what you get, the experience is good during the DLC missions, and you've then got a great character for life.

Pros
Excellent writing Great new character mechanics

Cons
It only features a short three missions
