Marvel Studios Will Not Recast Black Panther After Chadwick Boseman's Passing-November 2024
Nov 23, 2024 6:54 AM

Black Panther 2 is going to be a very different movie than initially planned after the tragic passing of star Chadwick Boseman. During the Disney Investors Day live stream, Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige confirmed that they will not be recasting the role.

Reflecting on Boseman's work, Feige explained: "His portrayal of T'Challa, the Black Panther, is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium. And it's for that reason that we will not recast the character. However, to honor the legacy that Chad helped us build through his portrayal of the kingdom of Wakanda, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film."

Feige continued, explaining that writer/director Ryan Coogler is currently at work on Black Panther 2, which is on track to arrive July 8, 2022. It is unclear exactly what direction the sequel will take in Boseman's wake, but it is highly likely that we will see an increased focus on characters like Shuri, T'Challa's younger sister who takes up the Black Panther mantle in the comics, as well as fan favorites M'Baku, Okoye, and Nakia.

Marvel Studios confirmed earlier this year that they will not be digitally recreating Boseman for any scenes in the movie.
