Mario Movie's Keegan-Michael Key Says Toad Will Sing, Describes His Voice-February 2024
Feb 2, 2025 5:59 PM

New details have come to light about the Mario movie, as actor Keegan-Michael Key--who voices Toad--has announced that his character will sing in the animated film. He confirmed this after Jack Black, who plays Bowser, announced that his character will sing, too, which has prompted some to wonder just how much of a musical the film will be. That remains to be seen.

In any event, Key told Variety that he "got to improvise a song" in the film, saying this experience was an "absolute blast." The actor added: "That was just a stick of fun, that whole thing."

Now Playing: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Official Teaser Trailer

As for Bowser's musical scenes, Black said during New York Comic-Con that fans can expect the big monster to belt out some tunes.

"Bowser is like a heavy metal rock star, a big strong and scary rock star," Black, a singer-songwriter in his own right, said. "I did a little rockin'. I think you might be surprised to learn that Bowser has a musical side."

Just how many musical elements will be featured in the Mario movie are unknown at this stage. In fact, basically nothing is known about the film's plot beyond Mario, voiced by Chris Pratt, apparently setting out on another grand adventure to save the day.

Going back to Key as Toad, the actor shed some new light on the voice he came up with for the role. "I was working on the voice with my partner and trying to find the voice through the internal journey of the character. And then with the directors [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic], we sprinkled some things in, we moved it around," he said.

"I wanted it higher and higher and higher," Key said of his Toad voice. "And that's where we ended up, and I'm really happy with where we ended up."

In addition to Pratt as Mario and Key as Toad, the Mario movie features Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Charles Martinet, who has historically portrayed Mario and Luigi in the video games since 1992, will have a cameo in an unknown role.

The Mario movie is expected to hit theaters on April 7, 2023. You can check out the first trailer above.
