TOKYO--It's one thing for a game company to own rights to a baseball league, but another for a baseball player to own rights to a game company. Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki has received 5,000 shares of Nintendo stock--a gift from former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, according to the Sponichi Annex, a Japanese sports newspaper.
The gift further solidifies the pact between the Japanese firm and the Seattle baseball team; in November, Nintendo raised its existing stake in the Mariners to more than 50 percent, according to ESPN.com. Suzuki was reportedly greeted and congratulated for his recent baseball accomplishments by Yamauchi Wednesday during a visit to Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto.
Once the gift is approved by the Major League Baseball association, Ichiro will own 58.15 million yen ($564,000) worth of Nintendo stock, which comes from Yamauchi's own coffers.
