Man granted military leave for gaming-November 2024
Nov 26, 2024 10:38 PM

It's commonplace in films to see young men purposely injuring themselves to get out of a tour of duty. Some of the country's most powerful men opted for the tamer National Guard rather than subjecting themselves to more severe branches of the armed forces. Jimi Hendrix was even rumored to haved pretended to be gay to get out of service in Vietnam. For one Singaporean man, getting out of military service was much simpler: He wanted to get his game on, according to Web site All Headline News. In his country, two years of military service is mandatory, but 20-year-old Stanley Aw will take his shooting skills to other gamers at this year's World Cyber Games rather than to the practice range. "In line with the Government's support for sports, culture and the arts, the Ministry of Defense will consider granting one-time deferments for pre-enlistees who are selected to represent Singapore at prestigious international sports and cultural events," one official told All Headline News. The WCG finals will be held in Singapore this November.
