Major Westworld Actor on If He'll Be Back for Season 2 [SPOILERS]
Major Westworld Actor on If He'll Be Back for Season 2 [SPOILERS]-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 3:28 PM

This post contains massive spoilers about Westworld Season 1.

Last night's Westworld Season 1 finale, "The Bicameral Mind," was expectedly one of the strongest, most revealing episodes of the sci-fi/western so far. One of the biggest reveals from the 90-minute episode was that William (Jimmi Simpson) is the Man in Black (Ed Harris), with their stories taking place on different timelines. With that major reveal out of the way, it doesn't seem like there would be much reason for Simpson's younger Man in Black return for Season 2.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Simpson said he's not signed on to return for Season 2, though that may not necessarily mean he won't come back. "Well, you know--nothing's permanent," he said. "I'm not contracted to go back [for Season 2], but I'm sure there's a possibility."

Simpson added that there are "certainly [more] stories you could tell" about The Man in Black's younger days if the writers ever see fit to do so.

"I know that he would be there for solid and interesting reasons," Simpson said about what it would take for The Man in Black to return. "But I think this story is told, the story of William and Dolores' love affair. I think that story, tragically, has been told."

Also in the interview, Simpson talked about how dramatic of an impact playing William/The Man in Black had on his life and career.

"Honestly, it changed my life. I'm not one who holds stock in Hollywood's temporary bursts of people talking about you, but creatively, I had never seen myself quite as an actor that's actually part of the story, because it had never been my experience," he said. "I can't believe I was allowed to play this role. Literally, it could end tomorrow, and I would be so satisfied that I got to do this part once. Truly, I'm beside myself. Didn't expect it. I feel like the luckiest character actor in the world."

Simpson also talks about when and how he found out about the William/Man in Black twist. Westworld Creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy did not tell him right away. He started to catch on in something of an unexpected and amazing way that had to do with eyebrows of all things.

"Around episode three or four, our brilliant makeup designer brought me into the makeup trailer and was looking at my face in a way that no one has ever done [laughs]," he said. "He starts talking about my eyebrows, and if I would mind if he shaped my eyebrows. I know women change their eyebrow shape, but literally no one has ever asked me if I would change my eyebrow shape. So it caught my attention! And he wouldn't tell me why. He was giving me vague reasons that were bullshit to me.

"So what was he up to? I started thinking about why someone would change my eyebrows, and the only thing I could come up with is that they wanted me to look like someone else. Then, I figured out that based on dialect and face color that the only person it could be is Ed Harris."

Though Simpson may not return for Westworld's second season, Harris has confirmed he will be "involved" in Season 2, so fans of The Man in Black will possibly get to see the character again.

The full interview is in-depth and very fascinating; read it here.

Westworld Season 2 was confirmed earlier this year, at which time HBO said the show's ratings were beating Game of Thrones by some measurements. A major theme for Season 2 will be "chaos," while we'll also learn more about Dr. Ford's true intentions with his new narrative. While an exact premiere date has not been announced, HBO says you should expect Season 2 in late 2017 or 2018.
