Maintaining 60fps on Xbox One was the Biggest Challenge – PC Gamers will Have to Wait for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition-January 2024
Jan 22, 2025 3:02 AM

Besides putting all its best efforts into the development of next major Gears of War game for the eighth generation Xbox One console, The Coalition has been busy bathing Epic Games’ most critically acclaimed 2006 military science fiction third-person shooter video game in stunning next-gen visuals and graphical detail. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition allows players to relive the story of humankind’s epic battle for survival in full HD 1080p resolution with smooth 60fps, but according to the developer, it wasn’t easy to deliver all the good stuff at 60fps.

PC Version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Will Follow the Release of Xbox One Version - Maintaining the Visual Effects at 60fps on Xbox One Was the Biggest Challenge

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the remastered version of the first installment in Microsoft’s bestselling third-person shooter video game franchise, is one of the major triple A games coming to Xbox One as well as PC in the second half of 2015. Although The Coalition claims that remastering Gears of War was more of a learning experience for the studio, the upcoming game is the first title that we will see from the developer, and it will be counted as a proper release, so to make sure the game doesn’t leave any reasons for the fans to doubt the smooth development of Gears of War 4, the developer has made sure it offers the best of original Gears of War experience.

Microsoft’s Xbox One is somewhat notorious for not easily handling next-gen games on full HD 1080p resolution with 60 frames per second, and so to inquire about the challenges that The Coalition faced during the development, GamingBolt talked with Peter, lead designer at the studio. According to him, there were normal ups and downs while remastering the game, but the biggest challenge that the team faced was to maintain smooth 60 frames per second without compromising the quality of all the in-game visual and lighting effects.

“It was fine but just like any other game project there are ups and downs,” said Peter. “Technically speaking, the biggest challenge was maintaining 60 frames per second. Maintaining all the visual effects and lighting effects [at 60fps], I mean it looks beautiful when running at 60 fps.”

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was expected to launch simultaneously on PC and Xbox One on August 25, but much to PC gamers’ grief, Microsoft has decided to delay the PC version of the game for, obviously, better reasons. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer first broke the news on Twitter while replying to a fan who wanted to know about the release date of the PC version. "Gears on Win10 is later than Xbox One version," he wrote. Later, a Microsoft spokesperson provided IGN with the following clarification statement:

"The Windows 10 version of ‘Gears of War: Ultimate Edition’ will release at a later time, following the release of the Xbox One version on Aug. 25. The team decided to prioritize polish and performance over street date – to make sure we deliver a great experience for PC gamers. The DX12 version will support 4K resolution, unlimited refresh rates and controller and mouse and keyboard controls, so there was a bit more for us to test, optimize and perfect.”

For now, that’s all we know about the PC version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. The Xbox One version of the game recently went gold, and is already available for pre-order and pre-download in the Xbox store. Players can choose from two different versions of the game; the Standard Edition that will set you back $39.99 and the Deluxe Edition that will retail for $59.99. You can check out details for both the packages here.
