After a significant delay, Mad Max is finally releasing in a couple of weeks. Avalanche Studios (which is also very busy with Just Cause 3, due in early December) celebrated the upcoming launch by showing over 80 minutes of gameplay via livestream; we've embedded the video below.
Mad Max, announced at E3 2013, will be an open world action game with a strong emphasis on vehicular combat, as required by the IP; it is estimated that around 60% of the game happens in vehicles.
He will be aided by Chumbucket, a mutated (in case you don't know, Mad Max is set in the aftermath of a nuclear war) mechanic who intends to build the ultimate car, Magnum Opus. Customizing and upgrading Max's car is a significant part of gameplay - exploration of the wasteland is recommended as it may yield scavenged parts.
Despite the huge success of the movie released in May, Avalanche's title does not follow the same story at all - there is no Furiosa here, and even Max doesn't have Tom Hardy's likeness. Even so, some key locations such as Gas Town will be featured.
The combat on foot is clearly modeled after the Batman: Arkham series (also published by Warner Bros, by the way), though of course Max doesn't have any qualms in killing his enemies, unlike Batman. Mad Max is out on September 1st in North America, September 2nd in Australia and September 4th in Europe - it will be interesting to see how it fares against the hugely anticipated Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which releases in the same days.
