Luke Cage Actor Auditioned for Game of Thrones and It Didn't Go Well-October 2024

The video embedded in this post contains Game of Thrones spoilers

Mahershala Ali auditioned for a role on HBO's Game of Thrones, but he didn't get the part because his audition left a lot to be desired, apparently. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, Ali said his try-out for Game of Thrones was one of his worst ever as a professional actor.

"I think my audition guaranteed that I wasn't almost on Game of Thrones," he said, after Kimmel said he heard Ali was close to landing a role on the show. "That was one of the worst auditions of my life."

Ali said he auditioned for the character Xaro Xhoan Daxos, a relatively small part that ultimately went to actor Nonso Anozie.

Ali went on to say that he worked with the Game of Thrones casting director for two other, non-Game of Thrones parts in the past and those did not go so well. But for his Daxos audition, he said he was "really prepared," adding that he had all his lines and physical moves memorized.

So what did him in? Ali said he was asked to sit in a tall stool with no back for his audition. He wasn't ready for this and his try-out came across as "really stiff," so HBO didn't want him, he remembers.

Ali recently starred in the well-received drama Moonlight. He is perhaps best known for his role as Remy Danton in House of Cards and Cottonmouth on Luke Cage.

The seventh season of Game of Thrones premieres this year. Earlier this week, it was confirmed that an actor who played a minor character in Season 6 won't be back for Season 7, though the character could be recast.
