Despite the truly frightening screenshot evidence at left, it's actually been a lean year for the extreme genre. Were it not for another Tony Hawk game--this time in the form of Tony Hawk's Underground 2--the extreme sports games might have all but disappeared in 2004. That said, it's nice to see some companies trying to push the extreme envelope a bit. Harmonix Music did just that with EyeToy: AntiGrav, a game that made some of the most complete use yet seen of the PS2 EyeToy accessory. Unfortunately, the results didn't quite measure up to the game's technical ambition, as the limitations of the EyeToy caused for wonky control in the game itself. Still, it's hard to fault a company for trying.
Looking ahead, what we need is another marquee title: an SSX 4 or Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 to truly revitalize the genre that saw few releases and even fewer quality releases. It's likely, however, that we won't see either of these titles until the next generation of consoles.
