Like a Dragon: Ishin PC Update Adds NVIDIA DLSS 2, Intel XeSS 1.1-October 2024

Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio released a new update (version 1.05) for Like a Dragon: Ishin, the remake of the spin-off game set in the late 1800s.

According to the changelog, the performance of flame rendering has been improved, followers' behaviour has been enhanced, the deadliness of spear and iaijutsu foes has been decreased, the amount of morale regained by troopers after eating has been adjusted, and loads of bugs have been fixed.

The most interesting part of update 1.05 is specific to PC, though. Like a Dragon: Ishin PC players can now select NVIDIA DLSS 2 (Super Resolution). Intel XeSS was already available in the game, but it has been updated to version 1.1, whereas the game previously only offered AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution as the upscaler option. FSR 2.1 also had its translucency and water surface rendering improved in this patch, by the way.

While NVIDIA DLSS 2 could potentially be modded into the game to replace FSR (it already happened with Judgment, another game by the same developer, although Like a Dragon: Ishin is based on the Unreal Engine instead of the Dragon Engine), the official implementation will always be superior. GeForce RTX owners will want to use DLSS 2, taking advantage of those built-in Tensor Cores to get improved performance and image quality (as recently seen with the Resident Evil 4 remake DLSS mod, for instance).

That said, Like a Dragon: Ishin already ran pretty well even with FSR 2.1, as I noted in my impressions piece:

First and foremost, the dreaded stuttering seems to be basically nonexistent, even though the game doesn't provide any notice of shader compilation upon launching the application. I've only spotted a single instance of stuttering the first time I discharged the firearm.

The game otherwise runs at extremely high frame rates even with all the settings tuned up on a PC with Intel i7 12700KF CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, and 16GB DDR4. As you can see in the captured footage, it hovers between 300 and 200 FPS at 4K resolution with AMD FSR 2.1 enabled on the Quality setting. The headroom is so high that I could comfortably use NVIDIA DLDSR to bump the rendering resolution to 5760x3240, using the 2.25x scaling factor from NVIDIA's Control Panel, while retaining over 130-140 FPS at all times and enjoying the increased graphical fidelity derived from downsampling.

Like most PC games, Like a Dragon: Ishin also enticed the modding community to customize the experience in various ways. There are 38 mods available on NexusMods if you want to get more out of the game.
