Let's Get Small
Let's Get Small-October 2024
Oct 30, 2024 11:36 PM

Perhaps taking inspiration from GameWorks and Starport and other upper-scale arcades found at malls and near movie multiplexes throughout the country (although results seem to be mixed as to how those urban uberarcades are faring), the Walt Disney Company is set to open its own scaled-back indoor entertainment complex. DisneyQuest, at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida, opens its doors on Friday (June 19).

With Disney, though, "scaled back" is a relative term.

DisneyQuest is a 100,000-square-foot facility housed in a five-story building. The building is divided into four "zones" - called Explore, Score, Replay and Create, the zones put a new spin on established video game genres - and visitors will be able to engage in such activities as shooting the rapids in a "virtual prehistoric world," designing their own virtual roller coaster and then riding in it, and flying a magic carpet through the alleyways of an ancient city a la Aladdin.

The second DisneyQuest is on the drawing board and should open in Chicago next summer. The company could perhaps open 20 to 30 such facilities, depending on the success of these first two experiments, according to a Reuters report. Each DisneyQuest facility will cost between US$30 and $40 million to build.
