Leonardo DiCaprio Helps Make Elvis and Johnny Cash Famous in Next Movie Role-September 2024
Sep 20, 2024 10:30 AM

Leonardo DiCaprio's next movie role has been revealed. Deadline reports today that the Oscar winner will play music pioneer Sam Phillips, who helped launch the careers of legends like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.

The untitled movie is based on the Peter Guralnick book Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'N' Roll. Paramount Pictures, which acquired the rights to the book, is producing the movie alongside DiCaprio's own Appian Way banner. Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones is also a producer.

According to the report, Paramount will "move quickly" to find a writer and director for the film. No release date or supporting cast has been announced.

Phillips founded Sun Studio and Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to Cash and Presley, he also discovered and helped popularize Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin' Wolf, and Ike Turner in the 1950s. Another element of Phillips' life and legacy is that he recorded artists of all races to "give voice to people who had not been given a voice," according to Guralnick, the author of The Man Who Invented Rock 'N' Roll.

Phillips passed away in 2003. Watch the video from CBS This Morning above to learn more about Guralnick and his book.

Phillips was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 in its first class. In 2011, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

DiCaprio finally won an Oscar for his role in The Revenant.

Disclosure: CBS This Morning airs on CBS, whose parent company, CBS Corp., owns GameSpot.
