Lena Headey On How She Wanted Game Of Thrones To End-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 2:21 PM

Lena Headey made a name for herself back in 2006 with Zack Snyder's 300, but found superstardom among the Game of Thrones cast, where she was Cersei Lannister for eight seasons. Fans were enthralled with the villainess as she also earned acclaim with five Emmy Award nominations for the role.

Now, Headey is behind the camera for her upcoming film, The Trap, in which she'll make her directorial debut. While she can't promote the projects she has on the horizon because of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Headey did get into the ideas she had for Cersei in that final season of Game of Thrones with The Hollywood Reporter.

When asked if she thought Cersei's end could have been better or if she had anything specific in mind for the character, Headey said she definitely had a plan. Spoiler warning for Game of Thrones Season 8.

"I think all of us did, to be honest, because you start trying to write the story yourself. And [Arya Stark actress Maisie Williams] and I would fantasize about a Cersei and Arya showdown; that she would come back as Jaime," the actress said. "That was our dream. But they made different choices."

The choice the showrunners made had Cersei and her brother/lover Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) die together when the dungeon vaults of the castle collapse over them during the sacking of King's Landing. She said she understands the pressure involved in tying every loose thread with the showrunners.

"I think in hindsight, everybody understands that. You're in it, and you've been so invested, there's a moment of, 'Why?' But I absolutely get it," she added.

The Trap stars Headey's Thrones co-star Michelle Fairley as a woman living a life of solitude when she meets a mysterious young drifter (James Nelson Joyce). The project is based on Headey's short film, which she also wrote.
