Kumail Nanjiani Stars As Chippendales Founder In New Hulu Series-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 7:30 PM

Hulu has announced that Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, The Big Sick) will executive produce and star in Immigrant, an upcoming straight-to-series limited series about "the true story of Somen 'Steve' Banerjee, the Indian-American entrepreneur who started [touring dance troupe] Chippendales." Nanjiani will play Banerjee, and the series is expected to run for eight episodes.

The actor is collaborating with Robert Siegel, who similarly has Pam & Tommy--an eight-part series about the 1995 theft and release of Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee's infamous sex tape--in the works, also for Hulu. Immigrant is being described as a series that "will detail the insane, darkly comedic, crime-ridden story behind the unique male revue that became a cultural phenomenon."

In addition to Siegel and Nanjiani, the show's creative team includes Dylan Sellers, Emily V. Gordon, as well as Rajiv Joseph and Mehar Sethi, who will also write on the series.

Fans of Immigrant's story or the Chippendales are also likely to be interested in HBO Max's The Real Magic Mike, an unscripted series about dudes getting nude. As of April, the reality series was conducting a nationwide casting search, and is expected to debut on the streaming service later this year. As the name suggests, the series is a spiritual companion to the 2012 film Magic Mike and its 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL--both loosely based on the experiences of actor Channing Tatum, who was an 18-year-old stripper in Tampa, Florida.
