Kinect shipments top 10 million
Kinect shipments top 10 million-November 2024
Nov 2, 2024 3:31 PM

In January, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft announced that the Kinect had shipped more than 8 million units--and that Xbox 360 sales had topped 50 million.

  10 million units have Kinect-ed.

Now, Microsoft is celebrating another milestone for its motion-sensing device. According to Xbox.com, the Kinect has now sold 10 million units worldwide since its launch. The peripheral went on sale on November 4, 2010, in North America, November 10 in Europe, and November 20 in Japan.

Microsoft did not break down sales by region or say whether or not the figure was for units sold-in (shipped) or sold-through (actually sold to customers). However, the figure was apparently good enough to qualify the Kinect for the Guinness World Record for "fastest-selling consumer electronics device." According to the beer-backed record book, the Kinect averaged 133,333 units sold per day for a total of 8 million units between November 4, 2010, and January 3, 2011--its first 60 days on the market.

Currently retailing in the US for $150, the Kinect system does not require any controller whatsoever. The system launched with 17 titles, including Dance Central, Kinect Sports, Fighters Uncaged, and Kinect Joy Ride. The system also comes with the minigame compilation Kinect Adventures and is available bundled with both the 4GB and the 250GB versions of the Xbox 360. To date, the company said some 10 million Kinect games have been sold, presumably not counting Kinect Adventures.
