Justin's Journal, Entry #1
Justin's Journal, Entry #1-November 2024
Nov 27, 2024 9:41 AM

It's Wednesday morning here in Tokyo now, I think, and I've woken up a little after 7am, which is way better than the 2am I managed yesterday. This is my sixth visit to Tokyo for TGS, but yesterday was actually the first time that I've ever had anything resembling a "free" day that I could spend looking around. So, did I check out any ancient temples? Did I take in my first live sumo wrestling match? Nope, I spent about six hours shopping in Tokyo's Akihabara "Electric Town" district (I've been before, but it's always been a rush), where I picked up a few new games for my DS Lite.

In the very first store that we went into I spotted a copy of Game & Watch Collection for around $40, which I quickly made mine. The game, which was released only via Club Nintendo, features three of my favorite dual-screen Game & Watch games: Donkey Kong, Oil Panic, and Green House. Judging by the high scores that were on the cart when I got it, the previous owner had only played it for about five minutes, so I left feeling like I'd found a rare bargain. Of course, every store we visited subsequently ended up having multiple copies of the game for sale, but they were all priced some $20 higher because they were still sealed.

The only other two games that I purchased today were Dotstream and Boundish, both from Nintendo's "bit Generations" series for the GBA. These simplistic but stylish offerings cost between $15 and $20 each, and are well worth it. Dotstream is a racing game in which you navigate a dot that leaves a colored line (or stream) behind it through courses littered with obstacles and power-ups. Boundish is a collection of five Pong-style minigames. I'll try to get some footage of them up on the site when we get back to San Francisco. Jeff picked up the entire collection of seven bit Generation games yesterday along with about the same number of somewhat questionable Xbox 360 titles (for the points, of course), so expect much weirdness on the site in the coming weeks.

I think that's about all I have to report right now, especially since I need to go get some breakfast. But before I leave, USB chargers for DS and PSP are great, and here's a photo of Jeff with just some of our horribly overweight TGS luggage. Excuse the quality of these photos, by the way, the only camera I have with me is my cell phone.
