Oct 29, 2024 11:23 PM

At the Sun Microsystem's Java One Developers Conference, Sega of America announced the implementation of the Planetweb Java Virtual Machine into its upcoming version 3.0 Dreamcast browser, which is scheduled for release this September. This so-called PersonalJava solution will let gamers have seamless access to an increased level of online multiplayer gaming through the Dreamcast, and will feature Java-based games and enhancement web services.

"We're committed to creating the ultimate gaming and online experience for Dreamcast users," said Gabrielle Mitchell, director of marketing for, Sega.com. "The Planetweb Java technology-powered browser will deliver Dreamcast users access to enhanced gaming content, including Java technology-based applications and games."

"Planetweb is pleased to be the first software manufacturer to develop a PersonalJava application environment for consumer electronic devices," said Ken Soohoo, co-founder, president, and CEO of Planetweb. "Planetweb's implementation of PersonalJava technology offers our OEM partners a robust Internet- enabling software that enriches the usefulness and product life of consumer electronic devices."

This latest announcement by Sega of America closely follows the confirmation Sega Entrerprises gave yesterday concerning its development partnership with Motorola. Under that agreement, Sega will develop games for handheld devices implementing Motorola's Java-based J2ME platform.
