Jason Momoa Casts Doubt On Future As Aquaman Amid DC Universe Evolution-December 2024
Dec 21, 2024 10:44 PM

Jason Momoa, who currently plays Aquaman in the DC cinematic universe, has expressed uncertainty about his future with the franchise. In an interview with ET, Momoa addressed speculations that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might mark his final stint as the King of Atlantis.

"I don't necessarily want it to be the end... [but] I don't think it's really, like, a choice," Momoa said, shedding light on discussions with James Gunn and Peter Safran, the architects of DC's future film projects. The actor hinted at the duo's inclination to "start their own new thing up," casting doubts on his continued role as Aquaman.

"The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there's a possibility," Momoa said. "[But] right now, I'm like, 'It's not looking too good.' I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time… if there's a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it."

While acknowledging his fondness for Aquaman, Momoa entertained the idea of embracing another DC character. Lobo, the interstellar mercenary, caught the actor's interest. "I was a big Lobo fan growing up, I read every comic… Warner and DC is definitely my home. So, that's all I'll say."

DC fans are by now familiar with project and role revisions under Gunn and Safran's charge. Henry Cavill, originally set to return as Superman, later confirmed his departure from The Witcher to make room. However, he won't play Superman in the upcoming Superman Legacy, focusing on a younger character. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson expressed on Peacock's Hart to Heart that Black Adam, a new DC Studios franchise, faced setbacks due to the "web of new leadership."

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters on December 22.
