Surprise, surprise: The latest game-sales chart from industry-research firm Media-Create has a DS game coming out on top in Japan. Once again, titles for Nintendo's portable dominated the top 10 list during the week of May 22 to 28.

While the number-one game was a new entrant--New Super Mario Bros. for the DS--the rest of the list was mostly made up of returnees. Their ranks included a trifecta of brain-training games: Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training (second), Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (third), and Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Duke (eighth). They were joined by Tetris DS (fifth) and Animal Crossing: Wild World (ninth).

However, the week also saw a very rare sight--a PSP title cracking the Japanese top 10. The game in question was Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable, which features characters from the two titular Square Enix series. It is based on a popular board game released in Japan in late 2004 but features several new levels and characters not present in its inspiration.

The rest of the Media-Create bestsellers for the week of May 22 to 28 were all for a single platform--the PlayStation 2. The most popular was sixth-place finisher KimiKiss, the latest attempt to cash in on the Japanese dating-game craze. Right behind it was Konami's Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 in seventh, three slots ahead of baseball sim Jikkyou Powerful Major League.
