Is LMQ the next C9? A look at LMQ's debut in summer 2014 vs. Cloud 9's debut in summer 2013-October 2024

LMQ burst onto the scene this summer split after being the hyped Chinese imports. Expectations are high for them, especially after their 4-0 superweek, but are they the next Cloud 9? With a much more competitive pool of teams this season compared to 2013 it would be unlikely that any team could repeat Cloud 9's 25-3 season. However, lets take a look at the stats of LMQ in their first superweek compared to Cloud 9 in their first superweek to shed some context on the situation:

After looking at the stats, LMQ's first week is very impressive. Everybody's assertion that LMQ is an aggressive team has been reaffirmed here, with them averaging an impressive 50% more kills per minute than the rest of the league. Their KDA, GPM, and Deaths per minute are also impressive, further ahead than Cloud 9 was after their first superweek. However, the one aspect that Cloud 9 has them beat is average game time. This comes mostly from LMQ's 47 minute slow win against Curse in their last game, where they had to take a cautious victory after a dicey dragon teamfight.

While the general consensus before the season was that LMQ would be placing around 3-4th, with C9 and CLG or TSM as favorites for the top 2 spots, this data is very surprising, but it is probably not sustainable. LMQ played 3 of the bottom teams, in EG, Curse, and Complexity. And while their win against CLG, one of the favorites, was solid, CLG might have been overrated as a team as Seraph in the first week did not put up good numbers at all. This is still a promising start for the new blood LMQ, and a much different situation than the previous import team, Quantic who failed to qualify in early 2014.
