Insomniac Games Acquired by Sony – Marvel’s Spider-Man Sold Over 13.2 Million Units to Date-September 2024

Insomniac Games has been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment, as announced today with a surprising press release right in the middle of the first day of gamescom 2019. It will become the fourteenth internal studio owned by SIE, with day-to-day operations expected to be run post-acquisition by the current management team and SIE WWS San Mateo Studio.

Shawn Layden, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment WorldWideStudios, said in a statement:

Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in-class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled. We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world-class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.

Ted Price, Insomniac Games founder and CEO, added:

Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people's lives. We've enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel's Spider-Man was a testament to this. We're excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our longtime WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.

Sony has had a lengthy relationship with this developer, considering franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. However, the enormous success enjoyed by Marvel's Spider-Man, launched about a year ago exclusively on PlayStation 4, clearly had to contribute to this choice. In fact, the press release also revealed Marvel's Spider-Man has now sold through over 13.2 million units globally as of July 28th.

A sequel starring the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is already guaranteed, then, but that's not the only way Insomniac can contribute to PlayStation. They could at some point make new Ratchet & Clank or Resistance games, for instance, and they've also dabbled in VR projects in the past with Edge of Nowhere, Feral Rites and The Unspoken (launched for the Oculus platforms). Given the increasing importance of PSVR in the overall PlayStation environment, it is a skill set that could come in handy.

Financial terms of the transaction won't be disclosed due to 'contractual commitments'.
