Guillermo del Toro is known for directing films as bizarre as they are beautiful, with a resume that includes Pan's Labyrinth, the Hellboy franchise, and the forthcoming Pacific Rim. He'll be bringing those talents to the game industry with the InSane trilogy, courtesy of THQ, but it appears as if the first of those games won't hit its scheduled 2013 launch.
InSane may have been pushed insanely far into the future. As part of an interview with Wired this week, del Toro said the game is still "two-and-a-half or three years away." That time frame pushes the game's release, at the earliest, to early 2014. Responding to GameSpot's request for comment, THQ said, "We do not have a release date to announce at this time."
Beyond a possible update to the game's release schedule, del Toro touched upon how development of InSane is progressing.
"Up until the end of pre-production on Pacific Rim, we were still going up to Chicago, to Champaign, Illinois, to work with the developer," he said. "And every week we have a conference [call] where we exchange ideas about the design, the gameplay, about the models. I'm taking it little by little. I think it's going to be a fun, scary game."
Del Toro also noted that it would be a "big mistake" for him to approach InSane as he would one of his movies,
"With a video game, you don't have to solve one screenplay, you have to solve 20 screenplays, because you are giving the player the illusion of free will," he said. "If the character kills another character or destroys a building, the game goes one way; if the character doesn't, it goes another. It keeps you very nimble. I think that's the biggest, and the most fun, lesson I've been getting. We're being really, really nasty in the game. We're really trying a lot of stuff that I don't think would even fly in the movies."
