Immortals of Aveum DLSS 3 Ghosting Fix Found, Though Performance Remains Disappointing-December 2024
Dec 27, 2024 6:06 AM

One of the first issues I noticed with Immortals of Aveum in my testing with the PC version was that DLSS 3 (Frame Generation) was practically unusable due to a huge amount of ghosting.

I informed developer Ascendant Studios and was told a fix would be on the way. The team pushed out the first update just yesterday, but as you can read from the official changelog, there's no mention of any DLSS 3 fix:

  General Fixes

Fixed broken water visual effects, including reflections and visuals while standing and firing in the waterSafeguarded against crashes and progression blockersFixed an issue with the interact point on SelkoFixed an issue where players couldn’t reach Alacrity FanePerformance improvements, including areas where in-world Corruption is presentPC-Specific

Improved the shader compilation screenSure enough, the issue was still there when I booted Immortals of Aveum after installing the patch. Luckily, Steam community user racerli found a working fix and shared it on the game's Steam forum. The user experimented with replacing the DLSS 3 .dll file with an older version, specifically version 1.0.7 (downloadable via TechPowerUp's public archive), and noticed that the ghosting was essentially gone.

I've checked myself and can confirm that is indeed the case. I've also experimented with the new DLSS 3.5 .dll that NVIDIA just released, but that one does nothing to improve the ghosting, so you're stuck with the older version if you want to get rid of the ghosting.

Alas, even with the ghosting gone and DLSS 3 enabled, the performance of Immortals of Aveum still remains hugely disappointing. Even with Frame Generation active, the game stutters so often that it's not even close to a smooth experience, even without any enemies or other characters nearby.

AMD announced yesterday that its Frame Generation-like FSR 3 technology will soon debut in Immortals of Aveum (and Forspoken), but it is unlikely to produce any better results than DLSS 3 in terms of performance. Any meaningful optimization of the PC version will have to come from developers Ascendant Studios.
