Looks like the odds of Hugo Weaving reprising his role as Elrond of Rivendell for a Lord of the Rings project, like Amazon's upcoming 2021 series, aren't good. In an interview with Variety, when asked point-blank if he'd ever wear the elf ears again, he said, "No way. Absolutely no."
Instead, Weaving says, he would be more receptive to revisiting his role as Agent Smith in The Matrix and its sequels, 2003's The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions--he would have been in the upcoming The Matrix 4, but scheduling conflicts prevented it.

Now Playing: How A World War Inspired The Lord Of The Rings - True Fiction
"Matrix might have happened," Weaving said. "But Lord of the Rings, no, I would never--I'm not interested in that at all. Look, I loved being in New Zealand with all those great people, and it was like going back to a family but actually, to be honest, I think everyone had more than enough of it."
Nevertheless, true believers out there could read into his dismissive tone a desire to make a surprise appearance in the Amazon series to be a true surprise. As Amazon's Lord of the Rings series is set before The Fellowship of the Ring, it would be plausible for a younger Elrond to appear--you never know.
Elsewhere in the interview, Weaving says he is "not saying 'no'" to any specific bigger projects or revisiting older roles in general "because I'm sort of open to anything." Currently, he says, he's focused on projects that will keep him in Australia. These include the recently released Shakespearean adaptation Measure for Measure and the upcoming sci-fi film Loveland.
