Huawei announced the new Mate 20 series during an event yesterday. Of the three smartphones revealed, we're most interested in the 20 X since Huawei is positioning the device firmly as gaming-focused (which our colleagues from the mobile section already suggested in a previous report).
Furthermore, during the presentation, Huawei directly put the Huawei Mate 20 X against the Nintendo Switch and called its smartphone a 'better portable gaming machine' than Nintendo's latest hybrid handheld/home console system.
In the following slides, they compared the 7.2 inches 1080p OLED screen of the Mate 20 X against the 6.2 inches 720p LCD screen of the Nintendo Switch. They also mentioned that gaming on their smartphone will be possible for up to 6.67 hours compared to the Nintendo Switch only allowing 3.03 hours. Lastly, Huawei demonstrated an add-on Gamepad (available separately for purchase) to provide physical analog stick and D-PAD controls.
There's no denying that this 'phablet' device is impressive from a technical standpoint and superior, in terms of hardware, to the Nintendo Switch. As you can read from the official specifications below, it has a better CPU, better screen, far longer battery life, not to mention the world's first liquid cooling system packed with graphene film for smartphones which should help with overheating during longer game sessions.
At the same time, there are also two other factors to consider. One is price - the Huawei Mate 20 X will cost 899 euro, over thrice the price of a Nintendo Switch console. Moreover, despite the constant growth of the Android game library, there is still nothing there that can be remotely compared to the premium game experiences on Nintendo Switch such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2,
Ultimately, software is more important than hardware for any gaming machine.
